Bet9ja: turning a 9 into a symbol

Bet9ja had an outdated brand manual and nothing people could spot at a glance. We rebuilt the manual around one idea, the 9, and then put the system to work on match days.

Design Manager during my Logifuture years. Identity made with Cemal Can Basaranel. On the sports work, Cemal was Graphic Designer and I was Design Manager.

Problem

The old Bet9ja manual had aged. It no longer matched what people expected from the brand, on screen or off, and in a crowded betting market the brand had nothing instantly recognisable to hold on to.

The brief had two parts. Modernise the look and feel of the manual, and create a symbol people would know without reading the name, the way you know a Swoosh.

Craft

  1. Make the 9 do the work

The answer was already in the name. We focused on the 9 in Bet9ja and pushed it through round after round of iterations until it could stand on its own, as an emblem, a pattern and a frame for imagery.

  2. Gradients made for the market

Custom gradients built on the official greens and grey, tuned for the Nigerian market. Local, modern, and loud enough to own a feed.

  3. Rules people can actually follow

Logo versions on light, dark and green, clear space, colour pairings and type. Athenian for headings, picked for readability and a contemporary feel, with Montserrat underneath. Written so any team or partner could apply the brand without calling us.

  4. Three skins, one brand

Ads and banners run on three skins, each with its own rhythm of athlete, headline and button. Different enough to stay fresh across a season, consistent enough to always read as Bet9ja.

Outcome

  • 1Number turned into a symbol
  • 3Ad skins, one system

The result was a manual that finally feels current, built for the market it serves. Gradients, imagery and type finally pull in the same direction.

Most of all, the 9 stopped being just a character in a name. It became the emblem that sets Bet9ja apart.
